Bridport was established as a town in 1761 by a charter deed from Governor Benning Wentworth. The town took its name from Bridport, England, a community in the county of Dorset. An enduring settlement, however, did not materialize until 1768. The years that followed were tumultuous. Settler families distrusted each other; the Vermont wilderness was treacherous; and the Revolutionary War led to further fighting. After the end of the war, however, the town began to assume a more organized character and to grow into a fine farming community.
