All about Grand Isle, VT

Grand Isle comprises the northern half of the largest island on Lake Champlain. When the town was chartered, in 1798, it was called Middle Hero to distinguish it from the neighboring North Hero and South Hero. In 1810, it took its current name.

The Grand Isle Historical Society maintains two preserved buildings for educational purposes: the “Corners” Schoolhouse, which was constructed in 1814, and the Hyde Log Cabin, which was constructed in 1783. The cabin’s builder and first occupant was Jedediah Hyde Jr., who surveyed Grand Isle in the 18th century. Members of the Hyde family lived in the cabin for 150 years!
