What to know about Brattleboro, VT

In 1723, the Massachusetts General Court chose to build a fortification on the Connecticut River. This would become Fort Dummer, the first settlement on the site. On December 26, 1753, the town was chartered as Brattleborough — named after Major-General William Brattle, Jr. (The spelling was shortened in 1888.)

Brattleboro’s most famous residents have included Saul Bellow, Rudyard Kipling and Ida May Fuller, the first person ever to receive a monthly Social Security payment.
