In 1609, Samuel de Champlain explored and mapped the region that would become our town. A century later, the French would claim these lands for settlement. Still, the town of Fairfax was not settled by Europeans until the English captain Broadstreet Spafford and his sons built a cabin on the riverbank in 1783. In the years that followed, more people made homes here. The waterpower of the Lamoille River attracted mills, and the town became a thriving commercial center.
